Pōhutu erupts up to twenty times a day, sending boiling water as high as thirty metres above the Whakarewarewa Valley floor. It keeps no timetable. Visitors wait; the geyser decides.
Te Puia covers roughly 60 hectares of that thermal valley on Hemo Road, Tihiotonga, at the southern edge of Rotorua. The land is Te Arawa land, held and administered by the iwi of the district. Since 1963 the site has housed the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, founded by an act of Parliament to keep carving and weaving in working hands rather than in display cases. The geothermal field is the older attraction and the stranger one. More than 500 hot springs and some 65 geyser vents sit inside the reserve. The built environment answers the landscape. Te Aronui a Rua, the carved wharenui, anchors the marae complex, its poupou cut by students of Te Wānanga Whakairo Rākau, the national carving school that still operates on the grounds. Te Rito, the weaving school, works harakeke gathered from the valley itself. In the nocturnal kiwi house, birds move under red light as part of a conservation programme that has raised chicks for release into managed sanctuaries.
